Screenshot Saturday: Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Santa Sangre (1989)

Without a US release for 22 years, Santa Sangre, a Mexican-Italian cult horror gem from Alejandro Jodorowsky, is finally available (as of January 25th, 2011) both on DVD and streaming on Netflix.

Santa Sangre tells the hallucinatory story of Fenix, a circus performer who, as a child, witnesses his mother (a devotee of an armless pseudo-saint) have her own arms cut off by her knife-throwing husband. The traumatic event has a profound effect on Fenix as an adult: he becomes entirely devoted to her, mentally and physically, by becoming her arms.
