The 83rd Annual Academy Awards are upon us! This year’s ceremony looks to be an exciting one with the vivacious Anne Hathaway and Best Actor nominee James Franco on hosting duties. This makes it the second year with 10 Best Picture nominees. All of the 10 Best Picture nominees are outstanding and deserving of their nominations. I can’t think of a more competitive year. It looked like “The Social Network” was set to win the Best Picture award, after winning a ton of critic association awards but things have changed. With it’s 12 nominations, it now looks like “The King’s Speech” is the movie to beat. Despite no longer being the favorite, “The Social Network” still has a strong chance to take home many major awards including Best Director, Best Score, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The Best Actress and Actor race seem to be locked, as many predict Colin Firth and Natalie Portman will be taking home these awards. Is it possible that Annette Benning could win the Oscar that has alluded her for so long? I feel the answer is yes! Hilary Swank isn’t nominated this year, so that makes her chances even better. In the supporting acting categories it seemed like “The Fighter” has it locked. Christian Bale has been the frontrunner for his brilliant performance as Dicky Ecklund, but his biggest competitor ,Geoffrey Rush, has a strong chance of taking home his second Oscar. Melissa Leo has already won many major awards but could the nomination of Amy Adams cause the two to cancel each other out? The Best Supporting Actress category win could show to be very surprising. I would love to see the veteran Australian actress and underdog, Jacki Weaver, win it for her turn as a malicious matriarch in “Animal Kingdom”. Does “Dogtooth” have a shot at winning Best Foreign Language Film? It was a shock that it was even nominated. We will know the answers to these questions soon enough. Though many awards seem to be locked, The Academy Awards have been known to have upsets. Hopefully this year’s ceremony will be an interesting one, full of surprises. Video Word Made Flesh will be posting the winners as they are announced. The awards will air on Sunday, February 27th. Check your local listings for times.
For those who haven’t seen any of the Best Picture nominees: ”Winter’s Bone”, “Toy Story 3”, “Inception”, “The Kid’s are All Right”, and “The Social Network” are available on DVD and Blu-Ray. The rest are still playing in select theaters.
